The best years of your life?... haha don't make me laugh

Everyone has heard that high school is supposed to be the best years of your life. I'm sorry but i refuse to believe that... if these are the best years of my life? Well then life sucks. The cattiness and bitchiness of most students in high school is enough to make me believe otherwise. But when most of the kids are bread with prejudices and hate, its hard to comprehend that this will be my best years.

Having been gay bashed my sophomore and junior year, both by completely different people. The first time being attacked in the bathroom and my head slammed into a urinal. The second I was being harassed in the lunch room, having food thrown at me for 15 straight minutes with the chant of "Faggot" following. No one did anything, not administration, nor teachers, nor any other kids. after i couldn't take it anymore I took a granola bar and ripped off the wrapper and turned around in my furry. The granola bar sailed through the air and hit one of the assailants in the face. To my luck the kid was three times my size. Before I could even get up he was on me pulling me out of my chair and into a headlock. I felt his fist slam into the back of my head nine or ten times before I was thrown onto a table. That was when the administration broke it up and it was over before I could even throw in a punch. What did the kid expect, I wasn't going to just sit there and take the food they threw at me. I went home early that day with a concussion.

Best years of your life? I think not. When you get a new principle that is parallel to Hitler and runs the school like a Nazi camp, trying to rid students of all creative freedom, school pride and spirit and create a drab environment where students can barely speak without getting in trouble. Mrs. Marlene Molter, she tried to take away spirit week, has tried to take away the pep rally, has tried to ban film club, despite how successful its been. The film club has won 5 out of 5 competitions its been in, and her excuse for wanting it gone is, "It's too successful." Since when was success a reason for banning somethings existence. I thought a school should be proud of their students successes. She's even trying to get rid of our best teachers. My creative writing teacher/English 21st century teacher is the best teacher I've ever had. My writing has greatly improved since having him, and he's pushed me to accomplish things I'd never imagine.

There is a personal vendetta against my teacher. He is denied tenure because of a satire film him and a few students made in film club the previous year called Bard's Tale. It's about two students who are convinced they live in the renaissance and dress as bards, playing musical instruments in their travels. One of the satirical jokes in the film is a line they use frequently "Nay, you're gay!" Marlene Moltar found this offensive to the gay community, though I as a gay person did not find it offensive at all. If she understood the film in the least, she'd see the satire of the film is making fun of the insult gay in the first place, not the gay community. It only brings forth the stupidity of the insult.

Ever since this film, she has denied him tenure and he will be fired this year if he doesn't win the appeal with the board of education, despite her lying in school board meetings and switching up her stories on things.

This year there was a creative writing assignment to write a script for a promotional video for the Red Cross Blood Drive. Our assignment was just to write a script. But we were encouraged by my teacher to take it one step further and film our idea and send it into the Red Cross Blood Drive video competition. I had never written a script before and didn't really believe in myself to write one of that caliber. But when i pitched my idea, my teacher was really into it and excited to help me film it. I was a little uneasy about it and wasn't sure I wanted to do it. But I had a lot of respect for this man, and he seemed so excited to do it. I didn't want to let him down. So we proceeded and I fixed up the script a little bit and got a bunch of the drama kids to come act in my short film. We set up a green screen and I realized how much fun filming can be. We won the first place trophy and $1500 awarded to our school. Mrs. Marlene Moltar didn't acknowledge or care about our achievements because of the personal vendetta towards my teacher. It's funny how the wins of the sports teams are chanted over the announcements every day. But when it comes to drama, or film or writing not a word is mentioned. The Red Cross invited Me and my team to come take a tour of Fox45 news station and take a look at how T.v stations and the news is filmed. Afterwards we would take a tour of the Red Cross and see how the blood is packaged and distributed to the different hospitals in need. There they would have an honorary breakfast for us for creating a video promoting giving blood and saving lives.

The catch was that this was a field trip. We had to get it passed by Mrs. Marlene Moltar, like getting recess time passed by Hitler. My teacher put in the 2 week notice that was necessary for a field trip to be approved. Two teachers after my teacher put in their two weeks notice for their field trips and got answers back a few days later. But we were still waiting on ours. The day before we still didn't have word on weather we were allowed to go. Her strategy was to just ignore our claim that way she couldn't be penalized for saying "no" on such a ridiculous matter. There was no chance in hell that she would say "yes" just because of her hate for my teacher. And the stupid thing was it wasn't even his project, it was mine and my friends. He helped out with video editing and filming, but altogether it was us kids being penalized from it.

My teacher found a way to get around her. The principal at Aberdeen high school is the boss of my principal. He straight over her head and to her boss and asked to make her let us go. The day of we got the approval, probably only due to her obligation to follow her boss's orders but who cares. But the catch was we weren't giving public transportation, luckily my parents were okay with driving as well as a few other parents, so we just car pooled. It was an amazing experience and the Red Cross was in complete gratitude, which made me feel great.

I just can't believe that a teacher like this who inspires his students to do better and teaches them to be better and fights for them to get the rewards they deserve will be kicked out of our school this year. And while he's gone there will be other teachers that stay just because they are on good terms in my principals eyes, though they don't teach and they just hand out busy work to keep us quiet like some daycare.

I have to believe that life after high school will be better than this.

Best years of your life? ....ha ha don't make me laugh

  1. Is this a true story? It's written so convincingly, yet in a fictional manner, it's hard to tell! But yeah, I know how it is when it seems like the whole world is against you, or against one person in your life. Unfortunately, there's not much that can be done about these situations. :( Just have to grit your teeth and let it pass by.
